Installed in a fully restored 17th century building, the Maison des Polders is a museum space which offers visitors the opportunity to discover the richness of the natural, cultural and landscape heritage in the bay, and more particularly the polders.
The polders of the bay of Mont Saint-Michel form a unique agricultural landscape in France, 3000 ha of land reclaimed from the sea, mainly in the 19th century, are now used for vegetable and cereal crops. More precisely, polders are marshes made dry thanks to the construction of dikes, then made cultivable by desalination.
Come discover the fascinating history of these lands built on the sea for agricultural exploitation.
The Maison des polders offers a museum space made up of models, interactive panels and a projection space.
On the ground floor, with free access, a temporary exhibition room and a shop.
Upstairs, find the museum dedicated to the polders and the riches of the bay: the history of the first traces of human occupation, strikes, dykes and land reclamation, the village of Quatre Salines and the old port of fishermen from Pas au Boeuf.
The Polder House can be visited while having fun. An Adventures notebook offers children riddle questions and other tests to learn the history of the polders, the answers can be found in the museum.
To complete this visit, come and take a walk on the greenway, commonly called the Duchess Anne dike, accessible near the Maison des polders. This path will take you on foot, by bike or on horseback through the polders to Mont Saint-Michel.
Do you want to rent a bike? Do not hesitate to contact the Maison des polders.
Also come and discover the “Echappées Baie” tourist activities program (nature outing, treasure hunt, heritage outing, etc.), winner of the 2014 tourism innovation trophy in the family tourism category.
This program will allow you to discover the rich heritage around the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel with a guide.
